What is the difference between old Maruti Wagon R 2013-2022 and new Maruti Wagon R 2013-2022?

Maruti Suzuki launched the third generation WagonR in India in January 2019. Prices of the new WagonR start at Rs 4.19 lakh and goes up to Rs 5.69 lakh. The new Wagon R is longer and wider than the old model and also has a longer wheelbase. Here’s all that has changed in the WagonR.

Dimensions

The 2019 Maruti WagonR is longer and wider than the previous-generation car by 56mm and 125mm. Same goes for the wheelbase, which has grown by 35mm and is at par with the Ignis. However, the new WagonR is shorter by 25mm, probably because it doesn’t get roof rails.

Powertrain

In the engine department the new Maruti WagonR is now available with a choice of two petrol engines: a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder and the 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder engine that also does duty in the Ignis and Swift. While the 1.0-litre engine makes 68PS of maximum power, same as on the second-gen WagonR, the 1.2-litre engine makes 83PS, same as in the Swift. Both the engines are coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard with the option of a 5-speed AMT as well.

Safety feature differences

The outgoing version of the Maruti WagonR was very basic in terms of safety unless you spent extra for the optional variants. But the new WagonR gets driver airbags, ABS, rear parking sensors, speed alert system, seatbelt reminder and an optional passenger airbag right from the base variant.

Top-spec feature differences

Another aspect where the new Maruti Wagon R takes a major step up are the features on offer on the top variant. The previous WagonR in the Vxi+ variant had projector headlamps, front fog lamps, electrically retractable ORVMs, alloy wheels, rear wiper and washer, adjustable power steering and all-round power windows. For audio, it received a 2-DIN unit with AUX-in and four door speakers. However, dual airbags and ABS still remained optional. Over the above-mentioned features, the new one receives dual airbags, ABS, remote keyless entry, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit from Harman with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, steering-mounted controls and command. That said, the speakers on offer on the new Wagon R are two instead of four on old WagonR, and alloy wheels have also been given a miss.

Boot space difference

Boot space is one of the strongest point of the new WagonR; it commands a space of 342 litres, more than several hatchbacks from a segment above. The old WagonR had 180 litres of space.

Price difference

Despite all the upgrades and updates, the new WagonR has had a minimal increase in the starting price. The top-spec variant despite new features and a bigger engine gets a hike of Rs 5.69 lakh, which is competitive in comparison to rivals like the Hyundai Santro.
