In one of his initial assignments as a car designer and co-owner of the newly established Rolls-Royce Cars, Royce aimed to create a combustion-engined vehicle for urban use. The goal was to achieve cleanliness, quietness, smoothness, and ease of use comparable to electric vehicles while avoiding the charging and range limitations associated with EVs. This endeavor led to the creation of the short-lived 1905 Rolls-Royce V8 Landaulet and Legalimit models, named for its wheelbase length.
